STAGE LIGHTING

The stage lighting designer is a member of the production team that helps bring the artistic vision of the play literally “to light.”  The primary goals of the lighting designer are to: 1) influence the audience’s visual perception and understanding of the play’s story, 2) selectively illuminate the stage, 3) sculpt, mold, and model actors, settings, and costumes with light, and 4) create an environment that supports the director’s artistic vision of the play.  Lighting can become like another character and aid in the ultimate goal of clearly telling the story unfolding on stage. Remember the spooky lighting effect you performed as a child in the dark by putting a flashlight under your chin and shining the beam upwards?

Some examples of stage lighting design from shows I have stage or technical directed follow.
